On a cold Sunday morning, 2 ex-Southern steam engines were under steam on the Norfolk Southern in Knoxville, Tennessee. Gulf & Ohio's 1890 Schenectady built Southern 2-8-0 #154 teamed up with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's 1904 ALCO built Southern 2-8-0 #630 to pull a train for the Lexington Group in Transportation History on the Norfolk Southern branch to Alcoa, Tennessee. The #154 started off the trip, departing from next to the old Southern Railway depot in downtown Knoville. At Alcoa, #630 was waiting to take over from the #154 and flew along the branch on the return trip to Knoxville. This was #154's first trip on the NS and #630's first trip on the Alcoa branch. The 2 engines put on a heckuva show for the railfans out to chase it, and we hope you enjoy it too!

  • Shame they didn't double head is it because of the size difference of the two engines?

  • @modeltrainman12345 I wouldn't believe so (look at the MILW 261/C&O 614 doubleheaders with Susquehanna 142) I believe they probably wanted it to be how it turned out. They probably did it in this order so the grades could be easier on the 154 (but I have no info verifying that, it's just my idea).

  • @modeltrainman12345 Also, there is no wye in Alcoa.

  • Wow, awesome video. Beats the crap outta mine as far as locations, and I live in Alcoa! I'll know where to go next time though! (haha, yeah right)

  • @csx6900 Haha, thanks!

  • Nice! Can't wait to see 4501 back on track! Love how CSX bans steam, yet NS is in love with it, haha!

  • @CarNutandTrainNut2 It was, that's what the diesel on the end was for (though that was planned to have that on there.)

  • @TNtrainboy15
