Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I saw an old interview with Joe Pass where he mentioned something called "Gliss Technique." He said how this technique helps a guitarist better perform horn phrases on the guitar. I couldn't find any video lessons on YouTube that discuss Gliss Technique for guitar. Can you help clear up this mysterious topic? Thank you for all the work you put into your lessons.
- Novak, Czech Republic.

A: In today's guitar conversations we tend to use a number of terms that can be considered as "gliss techniques" on guitar such as; sweeps, rake technique, slides and even to a certain extent bends. But, the term "gliss" which is plural for "glissando" means that we are (in some manner) gliding over to another note, or even a group of notes. For example, a sweep would be a gliss technique, and a slide of "one" note over to another note would be glissando. And, Joe Pass was certainly correct in that, this technique helps to create horn-like phrasing on the guitar.

  • Andrew, you are quite possibly the best advertisement GIT ever received. You can play ANY style you want, you can explain anything in a way that even folks like me can understand, and you're astonishingly humble.

Would that more guitarists, and teachers, were like you!

  • @SpawnofHastur,

Hey thanks a million for the very kind statement. Much appreciated. Hope all the lessons I've posted here & on my site help you with your playing. Take care.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Wasson

  • What kind of fender strat are you using andrew?

  • @Cryley

This is a '90 Fender U.S.A. Standard I picked up from Norman Harris himself over at Norman's Rare Guitars, in Tarzana, California. Norman was a friend of my Uncle's. When I met Norm and mentioned I was a sunburst Fender Strat kind of guy he pulled this guitar out of the back room and said, check this out! Over the years I've made a few mods to the Strat like Sperzel Tuners, a graphite nut, a Duncan CoolRail at the neck position, HotRail at the bridge and a Roland GK20 synth controller.

  • When you write a piece like this ,how long does it take you..and to play it ..?

Thanks for all that you do !

  • @torr71

These short jam tracks only take me a few minutes to dream up. The creation of the audio multi-track session takes perhaps 20-30 minutes, (I use 2 or 3 drum loops, record 2 tracks of guitar & a bass track). To make up an improvisation (that I'm happy enough with to post on the video) could take me anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes. All in all, it's a REALLY good practice session for me. And, I also have a lot of fun doing it.

Thanks for your question and for watching!

  • Andrew, i wanted to ask you if you recommend the G.I.T for people who want to get amazingly educated and play every style , and have a relatively high level and large range of technique (just like you) ;) so, is G.I.T worth it, or do you recommend any place that you think is better? thanks a million for everything you taught me!

  • Why this sounds like Dejango' Reinhardt's many styles of playing jazz.

  • Awesome Bro!!!!

  • The one person who disliked this couldn't play it on his Les Paul

  • Man, I don't play guitar but I sure love to hear and see this stuff!!!

  • Kind of old video, but I'll ask anyway.

I know what you're showing sure looks like glissando, as would be done on a violin or some other such instrument, but as those are fretless sliding up or down the neck hit's all the "in between" notes too. So wouldn't that SOUND more like a bend? I know that whenever I play with classical stringed instruments, I always have to bend to make it sound right.

  • @creativeguitarstudio hey why did you change the nut? dose it do a justice to you soound?

  • I will never make fun of Canadians again because of you.
