saladdogger...yes it was. the eninge uses a natural gas burner to heat the top end of the engine. As mentioned above a wide range of sources could be used for this purpose, i.e. solar energy and why not waste heat

Was this not developed in the uk by british gas?

It used to be strange also to have a microwave oven. Name me a few that dont posses one.

Well, the original Stirling Engine, based on the (reversible!) Stirling cycle, was first made in 1816... in Scotland...
You can blame reciprocating petrol / diesel / gas fueled generators for the lack of interest in the last hundred years. Clever thinking + modern materials & manufacturing = WIN!

This is one of the most efficien engines ever built. Only small input of enrgy creates hot water for the home plus a kilowatt of electricity. this is the culmination of 30 years of reaserch by the Sunpower company of Athens Ohio; its founder William Beale pattented the first free piston sirling engine in the early 70s. I'm reading an amazing book that cronincles the early struggles & succeses @ Sunpower. "The Next Great Thing: The Sun, the Stirling Engine, and the Drive to Change the World"
