As a boy my favorite area was the diving pool.

It was 14' deep and when you went off the top

platform is was very scary. I just stepped off

the platform because I was too chicken to dive.

So sad to hear it burned down. This was a

great loss to the SF Bay Area. There will

probably never be another one like it.

As a boy my dad took the ferry from Berkeley and then the train to Sutro Baths.

the writer is off on the date of the mysterious fire...it was not 1956. It was 1966.

@Gryphonalia : the ruins remain as a legacy to this monumental piece of San Francisco history and as a testament to this success story of Adolph Sutro. The ruins of the baths suggest much more than just a building that was once there - it has taken on a mystical personae that is usually reserved for the ruins of lost cultures. Personally, I would feel a huge loss if they restored the beach and removed these ruins.

I love the site, but at this point I don't understand why the concrete remains are not removed and the beach restored. Nothing about it suggests the elegant world that was and the presence of the ruins is more of a hazard than educational or inspiring.

Many thanks for the video! I was there on 2010-12-13, and I did not realize that the nondescript ruins has such a dazzling history until the name "Sutro Baths" caught my eyes just a few moments ago.

I love the Sutro ruins -- have been there many times... Just curious though -- were black people or other people of color (Mexican, Chinese etc.) allowed to go there? I didn't notice any...

Dad wasn't allowed to swim there, for fear of TB or Infantile Paralysis.

Wow awesome! @blueraised. Thanks for the posting. I've always wondered what these ruins were. I used to view them and the Cliff House at the botanical garden from above. Sure glad there are people like you who are interested in preserving history. This is great!
