Obama wanted the public option in Obamacare. Republicans blocked it... just like they blocked every piece of legislation he backed. As a political realist, Obama negotiated for a healthcare law that would get Americans insured, rather than table healthcare and leave it for a second term or another presidency. With the republican Congress, we're lucky if the President can get anything done.

Just goin to point out: Obama never actually supported the mandate. "Obamacare" was the bill Pelosi presented, the Reid version where the mandate came from was at the time portrayed as an act of defiance against Obama. He signed it into law because the Pelosi bill couldn't get through committee.
