The Varsovienna (Varsoviana) was a popular couples dance in old time ballrooms in Australia. Probably introduced during the 1850s and most likey has its origins in a Swedish folk dance.

The Varsovienna continues to be enjoyed today at Old -time and bush dances in Australia. Here it is danced during the Nariel Creek Folk Festival at a dance in Cudgewa Hall. The victorian version tends to be a few bars faster than others from north of its border.

The band is the Nariel Creek Dance Band where stalwart locals are often joined by friends. Diatonic instruments form the backbone of the band and provide the inherent rythym needed for the dances.

  • I researched the Varsoviana and I can tell you that this dance is of Polish origin and is a variant of the Mazurka, since the XVII century
