Orrrrr, just lay down a 4' x 8' sheet of OSB in the fall... everything dies beneath it, the worms clean up and in spring you lift the OSB and you have perfect dirt to plant in... and it doesn't blow away annnd can be used over and over again... five minutes and you're done. (">
This is a great idea! This would be perfect for claiming part of a lawn for a garden space. Very little work involved! I am wanting to turn half of my backyard into a big garden. I'm going to use this method. thanks for sharing!

@9aspengold5 Hay has seeds and will sprout things like wheat, straw is supposed to be seedless.
