Prabodh Chandra Dey (born 1 May 1919), better known by his nickname Manna Dey, is one of the greatest playback singers in Hindi and Bengali films. He has recorded more than 3500 songs over the course of his career. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, he dominated Indian film playback music from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Dey was born to Purna Chandra (father) and Mahamaya Dey (mother)on 1 May 1919. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya (meaning "Venerable Teacher of Music" in Sanskrit) K. C. Dey highly inspired and influenced him. Dey received his early education in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Thereafter he attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College, followed by Vidyasagar College where he received his graduate education. From his childhood Dey has pursued wrestling and boxing.

Dey started his career in playback singing with the movie, Tamanna, in 1943. The musical score was by Krishna Chandra Dey and Manna sang a duet with Suraiya. The song was an instant hit. He sang a solo penned by Sachal Dev Burman, Upar Gagan Vishal, in the 1950 movie, Mashal. In 1952, Dey sang for a Bengali and a Marathi movie with the same name and storyline, Amar Bhupali. This established him as a leading playback singer.

Accolades and awards;

Mohammad Rafi once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. I listen only to Manna Dey's songs". According to musicians Sachin Dev Burman and Anil Biswas, Manna Dey could sing any song of Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood.

Dey has been honored with the titles Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Lata Mangeshkar (Marathi: लता मंगेशकर; born September 28, 1929) is a singer from India. She is one of the best-known playback singers in the Hindi film industry. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over six and a half decades. She sang in over a thousand Bollywood movies and has sung songs in over twenty regional Indian languages, but primarily in Hindi. She is the elder sister of the equally accomplished singer Asha Bhosle and lesser-known singers, brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar and sisters Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. Lata is the second vocalist ever to have received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Mangeshkar was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.

Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1989), NTR National Award (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001), three National Film Awards, and 12 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards. She has also won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. In 1969, she made the unusual gesture of giving up the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award, in order to promote fresh talent. She was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.

With regard to "appointment" of a committee, that was the wish of our friends at the time when there was an "ambiguity" on determining the identity.

she was quite famous in 50s in vamp roles - but she was not Motilal's wife - neither your English is under question nor understanding me - what I found surprising was appointing a committee to determine the identity of a well-known person - you seem to have taken offence when it was not meant or implied - hope you overlook the episode - you are doing good service to listeners which fact remains. @yuanyuanyuanyin big "controversy" , "mysterious dancer" and committee appointed by the friendly viewers...settled...Kuldeep Kaur..."democratic process" sound strange as Kuldip Kaur was not dancer ... watch her in vamp roles in Anarkali, Samadhi and Nau Bahar ! That she was Motlal's wife is such news which seems far fetched - but none of this is criticism of anyone - democracy means freedom of speech also !

There is needless confusion - dancer in Parvarish is Kuldip Kaur - and Sheila Vaaz is the vivacious dancer in CID - Leke pehla pehla pyar ! She was also in Tumsa Nahin Dekha (l959) and Shree 420 (Ramaiya Wasta Waiya) !

The problem with Rajkapoor he never had his Originality. He miserably failed in trying to imitate Charlie chaplin and ended up with some half-baked style of nothing.

Shammi, on other hand, after Tumse nahin dekha, just got of his own style.

In Kapoor Family, as per my opinion, only Prithiviraj and shammi made mark. Raj as I told, was charmless in screen with his half baked charlie chaplin antics.

In fact, there was a "committee" appointed by the friendly viewers and they came out with names and finally we all settled down to the name of Kuldeep Kaur.
