Hostage standoff in Akron, Ohio.A fight between a mother and father of a 21-month-old child in Akron led to a six-hour standoff that ended with a man shooting himself early Monday morning.

The man and woman got into an altercation before 10 p.m. Sunday, which led to the child's mother to fleeing their Eva Walk (Park Lane Manor) home, according to Akron police.

When police arrived at the home, the man was not cooperative and barricaded himself inside with the toddler, police said. SWAT officers were then called to the scene to negotiate with the suspect.

Just before 1 a.m. the SWAT team broke a front window and tossed a secure phone into the home. The officers were able to talk with the suspect and get him to release the child by placing the toddler in a car seat and lowering the seat out of the window using a rope attached to the seat. The child was then rescued by members of the Akron SWAT team.

Negotiators then attempted to get the suspect to surrender peacefully but were unable to talk the man out of the apartment. Just before 4 a.m., the man shot himself and was transported to a local hospital, where his condition is unknown at this time. This is one of many incidents that have occurred at the Park Lane Manor Apartment Complex in recent months since the enactment of public housing. The Park Lane Manor sits across the street from one of Akron's newest schools, Glover Learning Center.
