Native Americans helped the colonists survive in their new environment. They gave the colonists new crops such as squash and maize, and taught them farming methods. Native Americans also taught the colonists a crop rotation system, which helped to preserve soil nutrients. The Native Americans had a wonderful knowledge of the natural materials in the world around them. They were able to teach the settlers about food, medicine and dyes. This information was very important to the colonists and they learned how to become farmers.

Another method used by the Native American was a technique in which rows of crops were placed closely to one another. In between the first set of crops another set would be placed. This was an efficient method saving space and making the most out of the land. The tradition of saving space and preparing it for the next generation was important to the Native Americans.

  • what is that music / group/ band name- i love it

  • @ImRussianJew The musical group is called Brule' (pronounced "brew-lay")...I don't know what the two songs are called...My friend bought the CD from Itunes and she gave me the songs but I can't remember what the songs are called...You can look them up on Youtube or Google >>> Native American recording artist Brule' <<<

  • I did re-upload the Video for the 3rd time...Just made some mistakes and I corrected them.

  • @TheNativeHistorian Very informative video thank you! A few other foods you should mention is the amarnth & chia seeds which were eaten by are ppl from mexico and the southwest. Both of these foods are very nutricious.

  • @chikawak Thanks for the info i'll put that in the info area...I may make another video based on indigenous foods and how they used permaculture and how they spread the seeds of apple trees and other fruit trees, they also used controlled fire burns to allow those trees to grow healthy...There are so much food that originated in the Americas, the list goes on and on...Indigenous people never over hunted and only took what they needed...Most of our foods is from a diet made of fruit and veggies.

  • Our ancestors were very healthy people because of Indigenous agriculture and foods...We need to stick to our foods our ancestors ate...keep it traditional.

  • @LJM331 After doing that for a year now, I have no more high blood pressure and I've lost about 50lbs. Never felt better.

  • @tube From the South West USA and along the Mississippi River to Mesoamerica to Western South America had similar foods during pre columbian times...Farming and cultivation was also found in central Canada during the growing season...What would be the state of the world if the food shown in the video was never created or influenced by our ancestors? I think there would still be mass starvation and famine... I don't know about "enchilota" it might be a Mexican food influenced by Meso Natives

  • Now I want to eat corn....

  • @achcauhtliyaotl You need red meat---but not very much----to get vitamin E, which is vital, to prevent going crippled. I personally experienced going crippled that way. I did it deliberately, to cleanse myself of the toxins in meat. Once detoxified, I've since, stayed an almost-vegetarian. There's artificial vitamin E, but I'd rather eat natural & traditional. • @tuberpie68 Great vid, btw!!

  • Is that nopales, at 9:15? I never had it served whole, like that; it's always cut into long strips. Some of the Mexican foods show here seem to be regional & local variants, that I'm not familiar with. The one that looks the most Mexican, & yet unfamiliar in some ways, is the "enchilota," which means "en-chile-ated-corn", in other words, corn which has been mixed, or saturated with chile. The sauce looks very much like mole. Perhaps, it a variant of mole, which i don't know, which includes corn.

  • @TheNativeHistorian thank you very much for fast resp :)

  • This is a very informative video. Great job. Remember everyone, as the video restates, you only need to eat three things: corn, squash, and beans. Upon eating these three in combination, you'll feel satisfied and full, without the need for animal products. Just drink hibiscus juice, which contains more vitamin C than orange. You can also drink pulque but it's difficult to find in the U.S. or anywhere else but Mexihco.
