  • He was German.

  • Is this real?

  • Hi Phatt,

Yes it is. That is why I posted it. I used to have WW 1 air craft all over my ceiling as a kid.

The baron's plane was one of them.

  • The popular belief at the moment is he was shot by the Australian machine gun crew, but the truth is we shall never know for sure, and more importantly it does not matter.

  • I have an old VHS tape with lots of WWI aces footage. I must try and find it and upload somehow. Fascinating and terrifying stuff.

  • Was his gunner called Von Lefthofen? :..:

  • God every fucking Canadian I read about or see is so god damn high an mighty.

  • @mckessa17 Observation planes? The Red Baron did not only fight observation planes. So don't keep your pride so high in Canada. Roy Brown A fought the baron when he was mentally incapable of rational thought with the trauma to his head at the time B the baron fought low alttitude in enemy territory being shot at by more than one gunner and C. It is STILL debated weither or not he actually shot him. AND the only one that may have an advantage in fighting the baron is Collishaw with his plane.

  • @Carjos07 I would have liked to have seen the Baron fight Bishop, Barker or Collishaw instead of observation planes like the obsolete BE2, history would have been very different.

  • @mckessa17 No one argues any one man's prowess in combat except the greatest. As they have the Barons for years. No one would have liked to fight the Baron.

  • The Germans really did not like to fight the Canadians they were very tough.........

  • I think the parachutes available in WWI were static line deployed, because nobody knew the effects of preimpact freefall on a seperated aviator. That S/L could have been a vulnerable link. I believe they might have been designed more for balloons.

  • Yes, for years they debated the truth but the modern investigation pretty much nails the coffin - the ground fire killed him and the man who fired the shot died shortly after the war from natural causes. Almost nothing is known about him.
