  • I'm surprised Lon even gives the offensive comments the time of day. If I were a man of his talent and reputation, I wouldn't bother.

Lon, I've said it a dozen times already, but you have truly inspired me to try portrait art for the first time!

Now if only I could get a live lesson for any questions I have!

What is your opinion on white charcoal?

  • Never hoid of it.

The negative comments are rather amusing to me. I think they also generate interest in my videos.

  • Wow long and kinda boring thanks for the lecture at the beginning

  • You were not forced to watch, I don't believe, nor were you charged anything. At least you thanked me after you insulted me.

  • @WoWLumbar lmao >.<

  • I wish, if you visit this video again (although it was posted 4 years ago) that you would share with us what paper you use. Charcoal so far is my favorite drawing medium, but I'm just a beginner. I'm having trouble finding a paper support that satisfies me. I started out on newsprint and I keep going back to it because that's the only surface I've found so far that I like. But it's not archival. What do you suggest?

  • Amazing and inspiring!

  • deceptional..doesnt look like the pic, it is a waste of time.

  • at 4:24 it's pretty obvious her face is too chubby, too wide by a whopping 10-12%, if you compare the width / height ratio.

also at 8:45 the guy's face seems a bit too wide as well, and the afro hair is not tall enough, the shape is too rounded in the portrait, compared to what the model has.

in any case these are very useful portrait videos, it always helps to hear about other people's thought process as they're drawing :)

  • @AnimaLiNstinct625 Hey, it's been a year, ever done any portraits in the meantime?

I've also just started out strong, and made a few videos about my experiences. It is TOTALLY worth it, I recommend getting any sorts of drawing class you can, show up there, and start dedicating some regular time to this. In the past 10 days (5h / day) I've learned more about art& portraits than my whole life combined :)

  • Mr. Haverly, you are amazing at what you do and are a definite inspiration! And thank you for having a kind, fun personality to match.

One question, what brand paper do you use? And since vine charcoal has a tendency to dissapate easier than other charcoal, how do you compensate for that?

I would love to hear your answers....thank you again.

  • Charcoal, cos their black?

    RACIST

  • It's supposed to look less than real. That's part of the fun of drawing... You get to exercise your own interpretation.

  • they always look too cartoony for me
