Spotting at NAS Oceana

Naval Air Station Oceana
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Thursday January 7, 2010

IN THIS VIDEO, while Wednesday showed up as being a very active day, Thursday wasn't quite as active. The video you see here was shot between 2:00pm and 4:30pm, again from Potters Road, and again with the 32s in use. In between all of the Hornets and Super Hornets you will see a C-9 take off. That C-9 is based at NAS Oceana, and returned later on - performing a low approach and landing on 32L - only to have a double compressor stall (the low approach, landing, and the compressor stall was not filmed). You will also hear one of my friends "direct" the fighter pilots in the hopes of getting the perfect photo. The beginning of the video features some base-to-final to 32L, shot from a spot located on base. I had decided to switch to Potters Road because the ability to film departures seemed better than the ability to film approaches - and departures seemed like the better thing to get.

Squadrons seen in this video include VFA-11, VFC-12, VFA-31, VFA-32, VFA-81, VFA-87, VFA-105, VFA-106, VFA-136, VFA-211, and VFA-213, among others.

If you are interested in purchasing DVDs of specific aircraft and/or of airshows, interested in anything and everything related to airshows (where the jet teams will show up, all airshow performers, airshow reports from airshows I have attended, previews of airshows I will be attending, etc.), a much more easier to navigate "version" of all of my videos, and/or everything there is related to aviation - including spotting guides to my favorite airports and military bases and aircraft factfiles, please take the time to check out Steve's Airshow World at http://www.stevesairshow.com .

  • So they let you spot at a NAS but not at ACY?...

  • Believe me... if I could spot at ACY I would do it MANY times! The military police treat the entire airport like it's Area 51... nothing to see here...

  • Great!!! Get a 1080p camcorder and it would look even better!

  • The camera this was shot with is capable of shooting 1080i, but I do not have the space to work with high definition video. In addition, the camera has some issues (my fault) but either this year or next year I will shoot in HD.

  • nice im totally going to the NAS Oceana air show

  • I've just drove by a few consecutive times to see if anything was going on... Nothing... All it is is the NG, the ANG, and the Coast Guard. But it is also a training site for the Air Force 1 pilots (and actually an emergency landing site for the space shuttle).

Something else must be going on there...

  • ***skeet range.....woof darn typos....been a loooooooong day

  • I'm going to have to use that spot on Potters again in the future. I stopped using it shortly after 9/11 when the SPs gave my father and I quite the stern boot. Have you had any issues there with the SPs.? Damn I miss the being able to use the skket range......those two days would have been epic from that spot! Thanks for uplaoding these two great videos as well.

  • nice vid, amazing quality too 5*

  • love the breaks
