Dining on Amtrak

Amtrak food isn't too bad really, much better than that nasty airline food, and you can get stinking drunk and fall asleep in your cabin without being arrested by sky marshals.

I've always found train food atrocious and Amtrak was the worst.

The food is much better than it once was years ago, plus there's a selection. And I like the dining car atmosphere, meeting fellow travelers, and watch the scenery as you eat. I find it very comfortable, and enjoy going to the diner and having every one of my meals there. If you book a sleeper the price of all of your meals and the 4:00pm wine and cheese (on the Coast Starlight) is included. Great music!

I loved having dinner on the Zephyr while crossing the Mississippi. The best lunch was high in the Sierras, and breakfast as the first mesas appeared in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado while climbing toward Denver. What a trip, and what food! The comment about needing ones wallet, is only if you are not traveling first class. The food is on the first class ticket. I look forward to my next Amtrak joiurney.

Silver Meteor & Silver Star dining car service is awesome! The food was very good, and the waiters were excellent. Havent been on the Crescent yet, but its on my to do list.
My favorite part is passing over railroad crossings while eating in the dining car. While Im inside enjoying a nice meal, the people at the crossing are stuck waiting for the train to pass.
