Supplementary issue surgical tools for all Star Fleet Star Bases, vessels, stations, and most Federation outposts where trained, qualified medical staff is present.

The laser scalpel is designed to replace all antiquated sharpened blades of the past - both metallic and silicate - which if were used in a 23rd century medical facility, would most probably be hazardous to employ due to advanced diagnostic equipment in use. Protecting the patient from surgery-related pathogens has been completely eliminated due to improper sterilization procedures. This is no longer an issue, as the cutting object no longer comes in contact with body. A secondary improvement is the surgical team has protection from accidental injuries, which was common.

Advancement in amplified optical technology has lead to the development of a wide array of laser scalpels that are infinitely more accurate than their predecessors. These highly specialized cutting apparatuses utilize a focused beam of light - of a particular frequency - to construct the least invasive incision when entering the patient's body is absolutely necessary. Secondary Series scalpels offer cutting diameters of a preset scale of .5 to 17 angstroms, with intensity, pulse width and frequency modulation being selected along the unit's body. Scalpels generate 1 or 3 cutting beams.

Secondary Series scalpels are manufactured solely of spun rodinium, enabling implements to remain durable, reliable and allowing for ease of care. Cutting optics are solid state, corundum-polymer diodes powered by a CoSe power cell and are rechargeable from a standard base station. Units have an expected life/hour use of 12,000 hours.
