"Jesus". The name evokes many images, many emotions, many opinions.

Ernesto Guevara words in this video will get you the closest to my own understanding of the "historical Jesus," presuming YOU understand, as I do, that [1] Jesus was involved in violent resistance to the Roman occupation of Judea, [2] his final journey to Jerusalem was made with complete acceptance of pubic execution as his certain end IF CAPTURED, but with no such absurd intention motivating the trip, & [3] that sadly, like so many others, Ernesto Guevara embraced a false image of who & what "Jesus" was. (The video contains quotes from many others who've seen through the lie.)

In reality, Che's self-description, "I fight for the things I believe in, with all the weapons at my disposal and try to leave the other man dead so that I don't get nailed to a cross or any other place," could just as easily have been that of any of the MANY real, historical anti-Roman rebels you may never have heard of (10s of 1000s of whom were crucified by the Romans), or, in Jesus' case, heard the whole story.

To be clear: There were many REAL anti-Roman rebels in the Roman Empire, & from my own studies, I am convinced that the "Jesus character" who eventually found life in the Christian gospels & became Christianity's god, has its origin in the Greco-Roman folktale tradition, & was inspired by real-life rebels, much like more modern characters such as Robin Hood (William Wallace) & Zorro (Joaquin Murietta).

Quotes:

"My primary objection to Christianity is 'gentle Jesus, meek & mild'...'Jesus' himself in the legend, 'set his face as a flint to go to Jerusalem,' with foreknowledge of his fate. But Christians have not emphasized that heroism since the crusades..." ~Aleister Crowley

" 'Gentle Jesus, meek and mild' is a sniveling modern invention, with no warrant in the gospels." George Bernard Shaw

"Of course Jesus was a theist, but that is the least interesting thing about him. He was a theist because, in his time, everybody was. Atheism was not an option, even for so radical a thinker as Jesus. What was interesting and remarkable about Jesus was not the obvious fact that he believed in the God of his Jewish religion, but that he rebelled against many aspects of Yahweh's vengeful nastiness. At least in the teachings that are attributed to him, he publicly advocated niceness and was one of the first to do so. To those steeped in the Sharia-like cruelties of Leviticus and Deuteronomy; to those brought up to fear the vindictive, Ayatollah-like God of Abraham and Isaac, a charismatic young preacher who advocated generous forgiveness must have seemed radical to the point of subversion. No wonder they nailed him." ~Richard Dawkins, "Atheists for Jesus" (essay)

"After the fall of so many gods in this [20th] century, this person, broken at the hands of his opponents and constantly betrayed through the ages by his adherents, is obviously still for innumerable people the most moving figure in the long history of mankind." ~ Hans Küng

I am all the contrary of a Christ...I fight for the things I believe in, with all the weapons at my disposal and try to leave the other man dead so that I don't get nailed to a cross or any other place. Ernesto "Che" Guevara Letter to his mother (July 15, 1956) as quoted in Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life

"[Jesus] teaches that just as the sun gives light to both wicked and good, and the rain brings nourishment to righteous and unrighteous, God's compassion embraces all people. There are no pre-conditions for it, nothing we need to do first, nothing we have to believe. When we are ready to receive it, it is already there. And the more we live in its presence, the more effortlessly it flows through us, until we find that we no longer need external rules or Bibles or Messiahs." ~Stephen Mitchell. The Gospel According to Jesus [To clarify: Stephen Mitchell's "GOD" is largely the Dao of Daoism, NOT the monstrous deity of the Abramic tradition.]
