I am so impressed with the sound and playability of this Carvin Cobalt C750T that I wanted to compare it with my beloved '94 Taylor 812 and present it here.
One is $600, the other is $2900. That is something!

Recorded with Shure KSM32 through API A2D and processed with a few dB of compression from UAD LA2A into Studer A800 with a 3dB LF cut on Pultec and a touch of EMT 140 Plate reverb.

  • There certainly isn't $2300 difference in sound between the Carvin and the Taylor..!! the Carvin has a lot of spank; the Taylor has a well rounded tone..I would certainly be happy with either guitars, but that Carvin has a lot going for it!! :)

  • @melsamjay The Cobalt is definitely a "professional" quality instrument. The law of diminishing returns comes into play as you spend more, especially for what the Carvin offers for the price. There is a difference, but whether that difference is worth paying $2300 is up to the individual. You could spend another $2300 on top of that for a Bourgeois where the returns are even smaller, but worth it to some.

  • I love my Cobalt C330. Just love it. NOT a Martin D28, But for someone like me at my level, the Carvin is the BEST imported acoustic you can buy. As far as the neck goes, from the 7th fret down it feels very 60's neck Les Pailish as far as the hunk of wood is concerned. 12" Radius. Not a baseball bat.

  • @305hpv6 Well said! And good description of the neck!

  • I like the Carvin better for sure. It's not as hollow sounding. Has a fuller more 'reliable' sound with better mids.

  • @TvPguitarist A lot of this tone difference is due to the wood and body style, but regardless, I think the fact that you prefer it is pretty cool, especially for the price difference!

  • @Manbizuel It is actually the same pickup that is in my Taylor. Before they came out with the expression system (which I both like and dislike), they used Fishman Matrix pickups. So I think the Cobalt sounds great plugged in. But I am a HUGE fan of the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI also, which pairs well with that pickup of course. I highly recommend the Aura DI with the Cobalt!

  • @Occamsweb I agree - it would be nice to compare it to an 810 (or any Taylor dreadnought). I'm also a generally a fan of smaller-bodied acoustics although I prefer the dreadnought sound for strumming usually. But the main point of the video was to demonstrate how well the Cobalt holds up to the Taylor in terms of general sound quality. Even though they are totally different designs, the Cobalt still holds its own.

  • It would be interesting to see a more apples-to-apples comparison, since a dreadnaught and a grand concert guitar are quite different animals -- just looking at the bodies tells this, but the sound also reflects it. I'm a Carvin owner and this demo would not sell me a Carvin acoustic, but that may be because I prefer the sound of the smaller body type of the Taylor in this particular comparison.

  • After reading alot on them and seeing this comparison im selling my taylor and buying a cobalt.
