well tomato plants that i have grown seem to do that, if they are indeterminate. They keep growing on the ends, and the bottom parts kind of "die" but the plant is still healthy and producing.

I think you missed the whole point; it's a fish thing, Called Aquaponics!

In Aquaponics, you use fish waste, to feed the plants and the plants in-turn act as a water filter to clean the fish tank; just like in nature, it's an Eco-circle of life.

Also my ground is mountaintop clay.
