The HMAS Adelaide is now resting on the ocean floor off the Central Coast of New South Wales.
The scuttling was delayed by more than an hour, by a pod of dolphins who were frolicking within the exclusion zone.
When the process finally got underway just before midday, it took about a minute to sink the ex naval frigate.
Thousands of people lined Avoca Beach to witness the scuttling, including protestors who tried to fight it.
The vessel will form an artificial reef and unique dive site and is expected to inject millions of dollars into the local tourism industry.
