The Sunset Shuffle was a popular dance in Dallas, Texas in the 1940's. It was created at Sunset High School in Oakcliff, a southern suburb which is now incorporated into Dallas.

This dance has the 4-count rhythm of foxtrot (slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, etc.) and uses the basic box step as an entry and exit to the crossing and shuffle steps unique to this dance.

The Sunset Shuffle is danced to uptempo music and mixes easily with Swing, Lindy Hop and Charleston. It is a smooth style with the feet and hips doing most the work. The shoulders and head stay fairly level throughout the dance.

The dancers in this video, Elaine Hewlett and Truman McCullough shot this without music. I've dubbed in the tune, Jimtown Blues. So where the audio doesn't quite match up, it's my fault, not our superb dancers'.

It's very important to us to save this visual record, as Truman passed away a few years ago and we don't have much in the way of original dancers who know this dance.

IF you know this dance or know someone who went to Sunset High in the 1940's send them our way. We're looking for people who can teach and tell us more about this dance.
