Metz - Cities of France

Metz is a city of eastern France, capital of the Lorraine region.
The city has both French and German culture and legacy.

- 300: Foundation of Metz by a Celtic tribe: the Mediomatrici.

- 58: Metz becomes a Roman city (called "Divodurum", meaning "Holy Fortress" in Latin)

280: Saint Clement is the first bishop of Metz

451: Metz is taken by Attila and the Huns

511 - 751: Metz becomes the capital of the kingdom of Austrasia (Frankish Empire)

843: End of the Frankish Empire, Metz becomes the capital of the kingdom of Lotharingia

959: Metz becomes an ecclesiastical city of the Holy Roman Empire

1231-1234: War of the Friends (Guerre des Amis) between the bishop of Metz and the duke of Lorraine.
Birth of the republic of Metz (free city of the Holy Roman Empire)

1552: End of the republic of Metz.
The city is annexed to the kingdom of France by king Henry II
Emperor Charles V of Habsburg try to retake the city (1553) but fail.

1814: Siege of Metz by the forces of the 6th coalition (Prussia and Russia).
The city don't fall.

1870: Metz is taken by the Prussians. Metz is annexed to the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian war.

1918: After WW1, Metz comes back to France following the German defeat.

1944: Battle of Metz fought between the US Army and the German army

1976: Metz becomes the capital of the Lorraine region (instead of Nancy)

Je confirme: Metz est une ville magnifique. Le patrimoine historique est extraordinaire et les gens sont accueillants (ce qui ne gâche rien ;) )

Je suis nancéen, c'est tendu entre nous et Metz, mais franchement belle ville.

Vidéo bien faite, j'ai savouré les photos avec un manque cependant, ayant quitté Metz il y a 10ans j'aurais aimé voir la nouvelle place de la République et l'Esplanade qui, m'a-t-ton dit ont été complètement repensées.
