Kandy O'Neill works for General Motors on the assembly line at the Lake Orion plant in Michigan. When she told the Detroit Free Press, "I think we have given enough," she did not know that a Wall Street columnist for the New York Times would take offense at her remarks. But Andrew Ross Sorkin published an article in the Times on Tuesday, November 18, criticizing her stand and calling for bankruptcy as the means of slashing wages, working conditions and benefits of auto workers. The wsws interviewed Ms. O'Neill at her home in the village of Goodrich near Flint, Michigan.
Kandy, if only more people could hear you. You are saying what we already know, as autoworkers, but there is so much 'autoworker envy' that it's hard to get people to listen. We contribute so much to our communities as well. The more we insist our voices are heard, the more people will listen. Eventually people will see that Wall Street and the rich are looking out for themselves, as they always have. It makes me sick too. It's just so obvious. Why are people so closed mined??
