Jim Leroy, former marine and pilot of the Bulldog performs a hammerhead at the 2005 NAS Oceana airshow.
On July 28th, 2007, the aviation and airshow community lost one of the greatest pilots ever. Jim Leroy was lost during a Codename: Mary's Lamb X-team Performance in Dayton,Ohio. A memorial fund has been set up for his 4 year old son Tommy Leroy.

my guess is because the plane's shape and motion (especially with smoke trail) during the maneuver resembles the hammerhead shark's swimming movements, typically with the head swinging from side to side
