Jim Leroy, former marine and pilot of the Bulldog performs a hammerhead at the 2005 NAS Oceana airshow.

On July 28th, 2007, the aviation and airshow community lost one of the greatest pilots ever. Jim Leroy was lost during a Codename: Mary's Lamb X-team Performance in Dayton,Ohio. A memorial fund has been set up for his 4 year old son Tommy Leroy.

  • Oh I get it.

  • my guess is because the plane's shape and motion (especially with smoke trail) during the maneuver resembles the hammerhead shark's swimming movements, typically with the head swinging from side to side

  • I don't get it. Why did they call this trick "HammerHead"?
