Here at Tripwire Interactive we're incredibly excited that Red Orchestra 2 won PC Gamer's Multiplayer FPS of the Year. And we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this than to give away a free content pack for the game to everyone that owns it.
So we're very pleased to announce the Red Orchestra 2 Game of the Year Edition featuring an amazing new map, diverse new game modes and a host of new features. The GOTY Edition Free Content Pack will download automatically for everyone who already owns the game - and, so everyone else can try the full game, Red Orchestra 2 will be available completely free to play for everyone on Steam this weekend, starting Thursday 24 May 2012 at 10AM Pacific Time. The content pack update will happen before the free weekend starts.
The content pack additions include:
• "Action" mode - Featuring a crosshair, easier aiming and toned down recoil,
reduced damage and open access to a wide range of weaponry Action mode is the perfect first step for players into the world of Red Orchestra.
• "Classic" mode blends the gameplay innovations of the new game with the
tactical and edgy gameplay of the original giving the fans of the first game exactly what they want.
• Mamayev Kurgan - complete new map, featuring both close-quarters battles in trenches and bunkers, as well as longer ranged combat across the famous hill in Stalingrad
• Refined and improved gameplay across the board, vehicle improvements, and way better performance and polish. We listened to the community and based on their feedback refined and tweaked almost every major feature in the game!
To remind everyone: there is a free weekend coming 24 May! You can grab the game from Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/35450/) starting at 10 AM Pacific Time this Thursday, so don't forget and tell your friends. The free weekend ends Sunday 27 May so don't miss your chance to try the game for free!

I'd rather see RO2 fixed than getting a refund. Because there is NO game out there like RO2.
Thing is, even if the game sold well and TWI are basically forced to fix the game. Because the huge amount of people who were disappointed ain't going to buy a sequel to RO2. So the sales matters less than the future in this case. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon RIsing sold 1.2 million copies, its sequel struggled to sell 100,000 copies.... because people were disappointed since dragon rising.

I could hardly call it complex (even though the truth is that even Action Mode is to complex for most gamers) but spawn on squad leader, more HUD, and the stripped down command system is there to make it less complex.

So spawn on squad leader, better HUD, improved command system is complex and inaccessible? :P

Neither do I. That is why I never said so.
What I pointed out was that unlocks and other generic stuff isn't a must have in niche games. If it was, then games like ARMA would be dead on arrival. But it isn't. It is far bigger than RO despite the fact that it is 100 times more complex and inaccessible.
If RO stayed true to its roots I think it would do better. Trying to appeal to both CoD gamers and hardcore community often means that you straddle the fence with the legs in between.

These are different games. I don't want Red Orchestra to be ArmA.

Arma series have never had it. Yet Arma series is way bigger than RO ever will be (and that was way before the dirt DayZ was released)

Now you're offending me. I played the original game. But that one isn't perfect. Sure some maps are smaller which makes for more deaths then usually especially considering the increased amount of players. All the other stuff however is a must for a modern shooter, even if it pretends to be a mix between realism and more streamlined match type games.

Maybe that is because you haven't played the original game and because you never had any expectations.
The game is indeed dumebd down. The command system is gone and replaced with a console-like command radial, there is more HUD details, the game is -more- forgiving than -before-, there is unlocks, perks, recon plane, spawn on squadleader etc etc.

I see nothing dumbed down. It's just more accessible for the larger audience. My friends who like Call of Duty didn't like it much either way so I can't account for that
