Description: I work in the genre of "ambient video". Ambient video must never require attention, but must always reward attention with visual pleasure. My ambient video works rely on three artistic interventions to meet this test: strong cinematography, manipulation of time frame, and - most critically - the deep manipulation of image and transition. Rockface II is a sequence of classic scenic shots from the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The work explores concepts of pictorialism and scale, and was the beginning of my experiments with transition and spatial montage. All of my work to date in the Ambient Video series are shot in the Canadian Rockies, and draw upon the power of these scenic landscapes. However, they are not paeans to mere visual beauty. At heart, this series is a refutation of the standard logic of film and video construction. They reject the hard cut and its reductionist illusion of invisible transition. These works celebrate transition, using an ongoing series of gradual morphs to move from one shot to the next - seamlessly and without boundaries. In the process, they replace temporal montage with spatial montage and visual flow, building an overall sense of "magic realism".
