Beginning at age 60, Mari's mother battled with depression for the last ten years of her life. After witnessing her mother's condition and how the antidepressants failed to correct it, Mari feared that she would experience her mother's unfortunate circumstances someday.

Just after Mari turned 60, her fears began to unfold into reality. She became so depressed that she was unable to work for three months—she had difficulty functioning and couldn't get out of bed or go out of the house.
