its a 5 string banjo with the 5th string missing. He's playing plectrum style in g tuning.

It looks like a 4 string (tenor) banjo because I can't see a 5th tuner, but his hand could be covering it. I'm pretty sure in the tv show he uses a plectrum as opposed to finger picks, so I would guess at a 4 string. Hope this helps.
