I've always liked this little lullaby, but the trouble is, I couldn't make up my mind what melody to use, so I used both of them! Hope you like it.

Away in a Manger was originally published in 1885 in a Lutheran Sunday school book and this created the misconception that the lyrics were actually written by Martin Luther himself. The author of the first two verses is unknown, but the third verse was written by John T. McFarland. The most commonly used melody for Away in a Manger was composed by James R. Murray in 1887, but an alternate melody was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895. In my arrangement, I play and sing Kirkpatrick's melody, but use Murray's melody between verses.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.
