I totally felt the motion of the trampoline when he was doing it :O

yeah, the character of pee wee was not quite, but almost, there yet. but it would definitely be perfected a few years later for pee wee's playhouse.
i do love his drive with dave, though-- that's the main thing i remember of pee wee being on late night in the 80's.

Is it July 1983 or July 1984?

Back when Pee-wee was more of a performance art piece. Both versions are awesome <3 Totally cute, I love how everyone feels compelled to treat him like a real child. "Be careful" 'I will!"

@33388665599 Pee-wee's character was pretty different before 1984 though.

@xGAARAxGIRLx because, he just didn't respect him before... He had to do what the show told him to do; like interview people he didn't like. I feel, ( and this is opinion) that Dave just didn't agree with the level of humor that Paul Reubens was pioneering. Watch as many of these Pee-Wee/Dave interviews that are dated before this one and you will see that there was no respect from Dave. I love Paul Reubens' humor as I grew up with Pee-Wee and the Tim Burton macabre respect to life.

it is so funny i went to Caroline's last November...now I can only think that "heck... I have been at the same place where Pee-wee Herman was 25yrs ago" lol xD xD xD :D

he's prob. subdued because the film was under-way. he and Letterman had a weird relationship. if you watch earlier interviews, it seems Dave can barely stand Pee Wee, but in this clip there's a little more respect from behind the desk; I think it's because of the Big Adventure Film, either on its way or being released. They could have made peace; Pee Wee cleans up after himself, and Dave is much more respectful.
Paul Reubens was rather subdued here.
