A story about this short piece:
"This piece, Ruthenian Song, is based upon a folk song from Ruthenia, once a province in Eastern Czechoslovakia, whose people were often called the "Little Russians."
The piece has a melancholy air, both its slow theme and gray harmonies conveying a sense of sorrow, or even of loss. The sad melody sings sweetly as it arches upward at the outset, then gradually descends. While the work's technical demands are not great here, its interpretive requirements are considerable. Lasting about one minute, this piece features an expressive depth that goes well-beyond the relatively modest beauty of the Ruthenian folk song upon which it is based." (Robert Cummings, Rovi).
