GPS will work, no problem on planes. A lot of commercial planes are fitted with them to aid in navigation. They have good antennas, but it is essentially the same thing as a TomTom or Nuvi

Damnit, I tried mine on a flight from Ohio to Arizona and it wouldn't work...

YES, GPS devices ARE allowed on the airplane. See the link in the description. I say this because many people argue that you can't. Even the flight attendant thought it was cool.
