It's been quite a while since I have last updated this channel... so I hope I have not gotten out of practice... ;)

I have always been intrigued by the Final Problem and the Empty House, and all the emotional impact and the toll it must have taken on both Holmes and Watson.

I see Holmes facing two very different conflicts with two very different men. One is Professor Moriarty, his enemy, his Nemesis, the most serious threat not only to his life, but also to the one closest to him, and to his living together with him.

Here is Watson, his colleague, his companion, his best friend... and who knows... according to the slash hypothesis even much more. All of this puts him into danger as well.

Holmes comes to understand that he cannot ignore the threat that is Moriarty anymore, he cannot just continue his life as it used to be without solving this one problem. There definitely is "no easy way out" this time.

And so - obviously torn between craving Watson's company and the wish to keep him safe - Holmes takes his friend with him to Switzerland, and it comes to a final showdown at the Reichenbach Falls. There are - apart from the explanation provided in the Canon and in the Granada series - many opinions and speculations as to Holmes' reason(s) to fake his own death, and to return to his Watson only after three years of dreadful silence.

Be it as it may - I am quite sure that this whole affair has plunged both friends into rather complex conflicts, and that the hiatus as well as the reunion did have some painful aspects. And that, eventually... the bond between them had become even stronger.

So, as I have always been more interested in the personal relationship between these two men than in the mere mysteries they solve... the events depicted in these two episodes marks for me a crucial time in the lives of both of them.

Starring the one and only Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and David Burke and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. John Watson. Special appearance by Rosalie Willams as Mrs. Hudson. Produced by Granada.

Scenes used are of course mainly FINA and EMPT, but I have added a few other snippets as well, mainly from "The Dissappearance of Lady Frances Cairfax".

This is for entertainment and educational purposes only, and I claim FAIR USE of all material involved. No profit is being made from this video.

The song featured is "There's no easy way out" from the Rocky IV soundtrack. All rights remain with their respective owners.

My recommendation: Go and buy the original DVDs and CD... it is truly worth it!

  • Brilliant video! I watched as if it was a new story, you had a very smart and sensitive idea: this is all canon!

...even if I still don't understand why Sherlock was so cruel to fake his death for Watson too....

  • @annafrancesca1 Thank you so much. I am somewhat tickled that you can view it as a story in it's own right, because that was what I was wishing to achieve, so thanks again :)
