my concern is the choice you give with the child in the driveway seems like a guised threat or bribe. The bedtime and car are not connected in any way.
Would it make more sense just to let him wait in your driveway. "David, I know you will come in when you are ready. I hope you will come in soon." Keeping an eye on him from inside and not making a big deal about him coming in other than to say "I see you decided to come in"
I worry the choices will just become clever threats.

Exactly!
Learning Glasser's choice theory changed the way I taught. If you use choice theory other teachers will undermine your efforts. They think you are on the students "side" because coercion is all they know and they actively tell kids you are a bad teacher.
Punish-Bribe animal training indoctrination was what I learned education was really about after 10 years of teaching, pretending to think it was about helping kids be responsible.
The system kills choice.

I love choice theory! It helped me a lot when I was depressed. I am 12 years old now and my parents (when I was 9) put up a poster in our kitchen. I would going through the step, is this respectful for me? For others? Long term affects etc. I was really amazing.
