Charles J. Meier was in his forties when he joined Avegost. Having been a merchant in the SCA, Dagorhir, and played many LARPs throughout Georgia he was a well-traveled man with friends around the world. He was kind, loving, forgiving, and knew how to handle a problem with skill and tact. He was a leatherworker who provided many of the props for Avegost's players and staff and was always willing to do a kind deed. When a man didn't have shoes, he made them shoes so their feet would not blister at an event.

He also added to the immersion of the game with his various props and presents. He was a true Avegostian.

On May 22nd, 2011 at the Avegost May Event held at Laura S. Walker state park in Waycross, Georgia Charles J. Meier died around 11:30. Charles, who had complained of feeling ill both before the event and throughout it had chosen to stay at the event to be with his many friends who he had not seen in months due to a foot injury he had surgery on. Charles suffered from fatigue throughout the event but provided his signature smile, food, and good attitude to the over 40 people in attendance. Despite his feeling ill it was Charles who left site to buy medication for the several other players not feeling well.

The Sunday of the May 2011 event At 11:00a.m Charles, a diabetic, marked that his insulin score was 316. This score, drastically higher than what is acceptable prompted Charles to inject himself with insulin as he had done for many years. Unfortunately, while packing his belongings moments later Charles collapsed near his friends and suffered a diabetic seizure. I was but one of many of his nearby friends that held his head and hands and tried desperately to save his life and kept him breathing and alive by using CPR techniques. While some of us worked to bring him back others thought to make him comfortable and brought a blanket to hold over him to keep the searing sun off of his sweating brow.

Unfortunately, when the paramedics arrived on the scene his heart had stopped and entered ventricle fibrillation. After four defibrillator attempts Charles' heart restarted and he was loaded into the ambulance. En route to the nearby Satilla Regional Medical Facility he passed shortly after with the paramedics unable to get his airway clear and unable to get him breathing.

Charles had many hobbies, played in many LARPs, attended the SCA and Dagorhir and ultimately chose to spend his free time at Avegost with people he had come to love and who had come to love him for the better part of a year. He inspired each and every one of us to do great and better things and his passing, while it will be mourned, will forever keep him in our memory.

Charles had more faith in Avegost than any player I know. He never complained about changing game mechanics or plot lines. He was supportive, called me a friend, and treated me like a loving son. He did the same for many at Avegost and in his memory we dedicate this handbook.

Charles, those of us that say prayers will do so for you and those of us who do not pray will keep you in our hearts forever.

Avegost will never forget its lost son.

  • I have updated the information for this video.

  • Chuck and I have been friends since we were in High School. I remember the fun times we had and hanging out with all the guys watching them play D&D. The fun times we had when Chuck rented a house down the NJ shore. He was an awesome guy and sweet as could be. He will surely be missed! Thank you to all of his new friends in Georgia. His life in Georgia looked like he enjoyed the heck out of him! Danielle Smith Aronica (Butler High School, Butler NJ)

  • @daniaronica Don't worry we refuse to let his memory die. He was a better man than any other.

  • I will certainly miss seeing him this year at Pennsic. I always look forward to spending time with him. He smiles and laughter were intoxicating.

  • @dragonwort Intoxicating and addicting.

  • Chuck was an usher at my first wedding. He was a good friend back in the day. The way he helped us out over the years was so kind and done with such generosity. Though we largely lost touch when I left the SCA, my fondness of him remains. What a nice guy.

  • @quietthunder He was a beautiful man.

  • I've known Chuck for some 15 years or so. He and I sat in his basement years ago and made my second suit of SCA armor and worked on his new Brig. He always had a smile and a kind word at the ready and is one of those gentle giants who seemed to have empathy and sympathy for everyone around him. Thoughtful, courteous, joyous and sharing of spirit. I somehow missed the posting of this and am the sadder to know that a friend passed from this world without my knowing. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • I was at his wake - at Pennsic this year. I came unhinged. I still cry regularly at the loss. Everyone should tell their stories of Chuck. Mine is: The last time I saw him, he said he was moving to GA. I said I wanted to go somewhere too - but didn't know where. He told me that I should go where the money is, and where I have a shot at happiness. In 3 weeks, I'm moving 300 mi. away, in with my boyfriend. I'm doing as he said. I wish he was here to see it.

  • @dragonwort Me too. He's someone I look forward to seeing every year. Come out to this ship burning. I will certainly be out there, with a shield, remembering what I will always miss.

  • sorry about your loss guys :[

just know that he is in a far greater place than here.

  • If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.
