It's interesting to see the difference is argument whether this hymn is liturgically appropriate to use for Responsorial Psalm. I guess whatever music you chose as a church music director, our main aim is to help people to worship God better.
I hate to be a pain, but he is a bit flat. Also, the tempo is way to slow. I have done this for many weddings and know that that is not the tempo marked. Also, on verse one he does not sing the exact notes that are there. It is at the end of the verse one.
You haven't offended but you are giving your own opinion. As a working Music Director I have to constantly be aware that the words we sing proffess and reflect our Catholic Faith. Many of the hymns in some missals today like OCP{orgeon Catholc press) have text that are against the teaching of the real presence of in the Eucharist or are hymns with purely social and humanistic centers with no mention of God our Lord at all. so YES the words do matter!
Please read the church's documents regarding liturgy as I have and do as I am a professional church musician and well educated on this subject. The masses for the United States are in the venaculer because since Vatican 2's reforms on the liturgy gives the permission to use the venacular. The church today uses this permission or exception to the full extent it can. The offical liturgical language of the Roman Catholic Church IS latin. And btw it does matter what words you use while singing !
Im sorry to say this, joyfullbunny, but I think it is your attitude that makes so many people dislike the Catholic Church. I too am Catholic, and I heartily agree with strat512. I believe that if you want to make beautiful music and praise God it doesn't matter what words you use. God understands any language--this is why masses can be in any language now. Well, he understands any phrasing, too. It's the intention that matters, not the exact words, in my opinion! :) (sorry if I've offended)
Btw Vatican 2 did not abolish Latin as the Liturgical Language of the Roman Catholic Church. Rather it only gave permission for the use of the venacular and People are using that permission to the full extent. There is no problem praising the Lord with this song, the problem is respecting God's word as it has truely been revealed to us. and the Church asks that in the context of the Liturgy this be respected.
