The new Raven Pro is one of the lightest full-service ice axes ever made. This simple, streamlined piolet weighs 100 g less than the Raven and has all the functional features you'll need in the mountains. The polished stainless steel head on this beauty tapers back to a wide platform that has finger notches on each side for comfort and a secure grip. And the classically curved adz allows you to chop steps in rock-hard ice with ease. Available in four lengths, the Pro's sleek 7005-T6 extruded shaft and stainless steel spike are both durable and perform well in locales like Aconcagua, Denali or the Himalaya.

  • Do you consider this to be a better choice than the Ultra?

  • @icychap The Ultra is also a great option. It is lighter, but only comes in the lengths of 50, 55, and 60cm, therefore making it a bit short for the general guided mountaineering that we do on Rainier. As an intro axe, it may be too short for some (depending on your height). As far as strength goes, the construction is the same as the Raven pro, it just has an angled spike at the bottom as opposed to a plunging spike. Hope that helps!

  • Doesn't the aluminium shaft have zero grip when wet?
