Twenty of the top percussion companies in the industry donated merchandise totaling more than $235,000 in retail value for the third annual Five-Star Big Beat that occurred in 15 cities in North America on Sunday, November 7, 2010. Each participating store gave away more than $15,000 worth of drum gear to participants in this exciting charity event benefiting the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation and in some cities, the addition of a local charity as well. Plus, one lucky winner in one of the 15 cities will get a special Dream Theater "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" replica tour bass drum head autographed especially for this occasion by drummer Mike Portnoy and the entire band! More than 50 drummers in central Ohio participated at the Fort Hayes Career Center, led by Tom Smith, drummer for the Danger Brothers. Also, drumming clinics were conducted by area drummers "Daddy" Troy of the Flex Crew (and formerly Identity) and Jeff Robert of Fat Dog.

The Big Beat is a great opportunity for drummers of all skill levels to bang their drums for a good cause. Here's everything you need to know: * What: Big Beat is a charity event to raise money for the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, which helps children grow through music. We also collect money and canned goods for Victory Mission (now Victory Ministries) as a way to help the community. There are over $235,000 (MSRP) worth of giveaways and prizes, and the main event is where drummers across the nation play a basic drum beat at the same time. * Who: All drummers, of all ages, from beginner to pro, play with the greater Columbus drumming community for the event. Each drummer brings at least a bass drum, snare, cymbal or hi hat, and a tom. * Where: the Arts I.M.P.A.C.T. Middle School, 680 Jack Gibbs Blvd, Columbus Ohio 43215. * When: Sunday, November 7, 2010.

If you want to support the charity, donation forms are now available online (Individual, Organization, Corporate).

Tickets are $10 and are available here and in store, and the first 100 to buy tickets receive a goody bag with over $50 of gear. All proceeds go directly to charity.

Spectators bring $5 and a can of food to donate. Fun events run throughout the day, including guest appearances by local drummers and raffles and giveaways of percussion gear from the industry's best-known manufacturers, including: * Dream * Drum Fun * DW Drums * Evans * Gretsch * Istanbul Agop * Latin Percussion * Mapex * Pro-Mark * Regal Tip * Remo * Sabian * Sonor * Tama * Toca * Vater * Vic Firth * Wuhan * Yamaha * Zildjian

The goodie bags for registrants include sticks, brushes, shakers, and other items from Pro-Mark, Regal Tip, LP, Universal, and more. More than $15,500 worth of merchandise is given away! Also, a national raffle is held with the grand prize winner (as mentioned above) getting a special Dream Theater "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" replica tour bass drum head!
