U.S. President Barack Obama will be following in his great uncle's footsteps when he visits the former Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald tomorrow. Charles Payne, Obama's mother's uncle, was among the U.S. troops who helped liberate one of the Buchenwald camp annexes in April 1945. Buchenwald was one of the largest concentration camps and had one hundred thirty satellite camps and extension units. Deputy Director of the Buchenwald memorial site Rikola-Gunnar Luettgenau says the U.S. president's visit is very special. [Rikola-Gunnar Luettgenau, Buchenwald Memorial Site Director]: "The last U.S. President who was here was Dwight D. Eisenhower, on 15 April 1945, when he visited this camp as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces and afterwards he decided that the world had to see this camp. Since Eisenhower was here, Buchenwald has become known in the world to show what National Socialist (Nazi) crimes mean and that it is important to fight against them. We also see the visit of Barack Obama as a confirmation of this." Around half-a-million people visit Buchenwald each year.
