Wasn't the first king of England Offa of Mercia?
wowjasonwow 10 months ago
@wowjasonwow The first king of a united England was Aethelstan of Wessex who reigned from 924 until he died in 939. Offa was referred to as the "King of the English Speaking Peoples" demonstrating the awareness of a general English culture across southern Britain, that he intended to rule over. Despite conquering or subjugating most of his neighbours, Offa never had any real influence in Northern England and the English remained disunited when he died in 796.
