A truly elegant aircraft, this is currently the only airworthy Catalina in New Zealand, and is lovingly maintained by the Catalina Group of New Zealand. See: http://www.catalina.org.nz/

During the Second World War, the RNZAF operated a total of 56 Catalina flying boats. None of these aircraft were of the amphibious type as is ZK-PBY, but this Canadian built example is (usually) painted to represent one of the flying boats operated in the Pacific Theatre. In part sof this video the aircraft shows a temporary French colour scheme.

  • I'd rather hear the sound of the engines of this little song coming from 80's movies..

  • @ignaciojork We understand. At the time this movie was created we didn't have any suitable engine audio. Now we do. Search for our channel and checkout some of the other Catalina videos, which do feature just engine noise. Better yet go to our web site at aviation film dot com and buy our just released catalina DVD -- lots of fine engine noise :-)

  • Very nice plane! Well done video, but mikeb has a point - we would rather hear the engines than the sound track. Thank you.

  • Yea, she was slow and not as sexy as a P-51, by she could FLY! Hours on end of patrol...One of these found the Jap Fleet @ Midway....

  • Thank you for the video - it's truly beautiful! I wanted to fly in the PBY that visited England some years ago - but it crashed in Southampton Water (I think the local City Mayor was killed in the accident).Seen head-on the Catalina looks just like a speedboat hanging from an enormous wing. This wonderful aircraft rescued many downed airman. Thank you for sharing your aircraft with someone who remembers the Aquilia Airways flying boats taking off from Southampton Water 55 years ago!
