I am playing exactly like that ever since I started some 30 years ago. When I realized that everybody else plays different it was too late to change the technique. The conventional way is very hard for me to do. I have less control over the tone, the runs are less fluent and I always drop my pick. I've always thought that my playing was "wrong" until lately someone said: "Hey, you mastered the Benson-technique!"

Superb video..... Hope you don't mind but I have posted a link to this from one of my videos as I was getting questions about the Benson technique and as I couldn't master or teach it I have chosen to point people this direction. I mean getting it from Rodney Jones who is a ninja is perhaps for the best :-D

Nice video. Thank you for posting this. I have video showing my take on this technique, too.

Great! This is about the best visual demonstration of the method I've seen. I've been using this technique for six months now, and it would appear I'm doing it right! Thanks for this fascinating explanation.

Hi Mark,
Your information has been very useful to me. Thanks a lot!
Manuel.
Hi RCR,
Saw your videos and I love yoiur music! First, let me say your video about the Benson technique is the best and clearest example on the Net. My question, if I may, is very technical, but here it goes: do you rest (part of) your palm on the bridge? I have the impression you don't. So your hand would somehow "float" over the guitar (except for the pink anchoring) and you would then open your fingers "like an accordion" to reach the bottom strings. Is that correct? Thanks.

@hamer646 Hi, thanks for the kind words. As I stated in the video, the main anchoring point for me is the side of my pinky finger. The rest of my hand does rest on the pickguard at times but there is no real pressure to clamp the hand down onto the pickguard. It sits very lightly or at times can raise off a little. I try to stretch my thumb and forefinger out to cover the lower strings rather than moving my whole hand. I hope this helps.
