This video shows the horizontal velocity (u) contours of the unsteady laminar flow around a circular cylinder in a channel at Re = 100. The simulation was performed using the open source CFD package, OpenFOAM® 1.7. OPENFOAM is a registered trademark of OpenCFD Ltd.

NOTE: You should not use any turbulence model in this case, since the flow is laminar.

This simulation is not specific to any fluid. To get the exact same scenario, set the Reynold's number (Re) to 100. In this case, Re is defined based on the cylinder diameter. As for the mesh, I used a block-structured quad mesh with 70k elements, but you can simply use an unstructured triangular mesh. Please don't use any turbulence model since this problem is totally laminar.

  • I would like to try and recreate this scenario. What fluid are you using? Can you tell me the turbulence model and rough mesh / geometry?
