  • @Sarathecici incorrect. That would be nondisjunction (usually) during oogenesis in the mother. Nondisjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes to separate during meiosis I, or the failure of sister chromatids to separate during meiosis II. Both cases result in an extra copy of chromosome 21 in at least one of the resulting gametes (and a missing chromosome 21 in another). That's where the extra genetic material comes from in Down syndrome.
