October 20, 2008—The world famous chamber orchestra group, the Festival Strings Lucerne, completed their five-city North American tour with a very special concert at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. Sponsored by the Swiss Embassy, this concert was part of the Festival Strings artistic mission, which involves reaching out to young people during their world tours. The Festival Strings performed works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and de Sarasate, and discussed with the students what it means to be a composer and artist. The Duke Ellington School is a Washington, D.C. public school that focuses on training in the musical, literary and performing arts. Students responded enthusiastically to the performance, cheered the performers loudly, and also appreciated another Swiss gift that was brought to them in addition to the music—the gift of chocolate.
