Prefer the sung version on the 5D album. Great album ~ very interesting mix of English/scottish folk with the Byrd's treatment (very effective) and pyschedelic rock like Eight Miles, I see You, What's Happening???, with the obligatory freeform freakout.
a killer version, shows that beatles where no where near them when it comes to excxuting visionary ideas by mixing eastern and western influences. George succeeded with wonderwall music 1968 but that was later on
It's a jam on the chords of John Riley. It's from their John Coltrane/Ravi Shankar period. Not my favourite Byrds recording by any means, but interesting to hear them working through an idea. If you listen in stereo, you can hear a banjo (probably overdubbed by McGuinn).
Playing Coltrane with a 12-string!!!

McGuinn meets Coltrane meets Ravi Shankar meets The Leaves and The Cryin' Shames...Aw jeez.... what a mess.

The banjo is more likely Doug Dillard who toured Europe with the Byrds in 1968. Same guy that Gene Clark teamed up with for A&M.
