Debuted in 1975. It was written by Lynn Ahrens and sung by Sue Manchester. This song teaches about Westward Expansion, or moving south and west from the 13 original colonies. This song was voted the 25th best song on the 30th anniversary edition.
Well these songs are meant to teach kids of a younger age group. I can't imagine I'd want my nine year old running around singing about the trail of tears, so of course they leave out a bit of the unpleasant stuff. The point is, they get the general idea across and the kids are getting educational value out of it.
I grew up with School House Rock.So easy the words come back. I wasnt a good student but singing a song made it fun and tought me alot.True it tought the basic info and left out alot of negitive history.Im wondering how you could sing a happy upbeat tune with stealing land and killing indians thrown in the mix?
Hanibrain, I understand what you mean. I am middle aged. I recall these songs from my school days and learned. I was not a quick learner. The spirit in which these were made was simply to teach, no political point. For me, I have had to learn that sometimes something is what is it is and nothing more. No hidden agenda. Thank you for your caring spirit. May we all continue to learn and respect each other no matter how old of a student we are.
My teacher showed us this... and I liked it

They forgot to add the trail of tears that helped lead to more "elbow room".
