I was really surprised when I saw this, as most comedians can't act worth a shit (just look at Jerry Seinfeldm, urg!). But this scene proves what an amazing actor Gervais is.
The whole raison D'etre of the show was the slow painful descent of David Brent made redundant in this scene, this is the climax. and I'm american and a fan both the orginal and US office shows.
Gervais deserved every award he got - this series was so well written and the heart-felt acting by Gervais in this 'redundancy scene' is world class! the full range of emotions are tapped into with this once-in-a-lifetime comedy of incomparable brilliance! and it'll great that not everybody can appreciate the humour and it's subtle finesse - that would make it too common. It's timeless - generations to come will be blown away by this series - absolute gem of a series!
