Although the better known version of Armstrong's Savoy Blues was recorded in April 1939 for Decca Records, this version made by Armstrong's Hot 5 for Okeh in Chicago in December 1927 seems to be the better of the two. The music was written by Kid Ory. In 1919-20, Louis had played in Ory's band in New Orleans before acheiving fame on his own.

  • Merci du partage, douce mélodie à mes oreilles ...

  • @sylla32 Merci pour la visite

  • That was kind of funky how it went into Lonnie Johnson playing guitar on this. Is this the original recording, or was that just added in for this video?

  • @backstageblues This was the original recording. In those Dec'27 sessions in Chicago, Lonnie Johnson was added to record Hotter than That, I'm not Rough, and Savoy Blues. See the comment of filra below. Thanks for your interest.

  • @pc300780 Couldn't agree more; they take a special place of honour in 20th-C Western music. Remarkably creative 20-somethings weren't they?! Would The Beatles be our closest contemporary equivalent?

  • Thankyou preservationhall01. According to the michaelminn discography: "This is the final recording session with the "classic" Hot Five lineup (plus Lonnie Johnson). Hereafter, the "Hot Five" would be whoever Armstrong happened to be recording with."

  • I love Louis' old stuff. He and several others wanted to make "hot" music, and man were they ever successful. This piece is nice and relaxing.

  • Great pictures.
