Dreadlocks are not just african. They've been around for centuries on all walks of life. And as for "whities look stupidS" I disagree. I'm a "whitie" and I think I look nice & love my dreadlocks :)

@xevos0719 Basically, I'm trying to be nice about the fact that I feel you and people like you are always trying to steal my culture (not just mine, anybody else's). Essentially, I feel that you are just regurgitating some bullshit that you heard from someone at a stoner drum circle with a bunch of dirty hippies. I don't have a problem with outsiders wearing styles from my culture, but just have respect for the culture that you're trying immulate...Pretty Please.

@xevos0719 For you to say that the statement: "dreadlocks are African, is MOSTLY wrong", that's a blatant lie. I also must say that the only examples of dreadlocks that were found (in living examples) in the past (before our generation thought it was cool) were in African tribes and in Hispanic communities (among black hispanics...that I witnessed anyway). Please keep in mind, you are speaking to a woman who had to wear a wig over her dreads (in the 90's) just to secure a job.

@xevos0719 This isn't to be hostile; I disagree with you. The term dreadlocks was coined by rastafarians. I know because I am a Jamaican, and my Uncle Ethan, an original rasta, informed me that dreads, in the rasta sense, was started as an antiaesthetic to go against the presence of the British culture that influenced the black people (mainly) in Jamaica to be anti African. So, the term "knotty dread" represents the deliberate lack of grooming to the hair as a STATEMENT (I will not conform)

True, I have seen many photos of Indians with dread locks - very impressive ones. However, I think dread locks existed way before any religion/culture was invented. Any uncombed hair will lock over time.

To people who say dreadlocks are African. That's mostly wrong dreadlocks come from all parts of the world, Russian, celts, India, africa, the middle east. The term dreadlocks was coined by a Roman (I wanna say Caesar but Im not sure if that's right) when they encountered the Celtic people. he said they were dreadfull locks (as in locks of hair) and the term was shortened and wide spread. Many groups had them a long time ago. It's a natural hair style all hair dreads natural some takes a lot long
