Ever since entering 'Worlds' - a 3d virtual world based chat facility that appeared on the .net in the late 90s - I've been fascinated by the opportunities for communication that virtual worlds can bring. Fast forward a decade or so, and the Playstation 3 is about to celebrate one year of the open BETA of it's own virtual world - 'HOME'. But is it all a gimmick ? Are virtual zones such as HOME and Worlds just glossy chat sites or do they have more to offer ? In the following couple of months, I'll be taking a virtual camera into HOME and recording some of the interaction there. Is a virtual community like HOME of any value ? Will the images, along with a sentence or two to add context, serve as an adequate witness to the 'presence' of users within HOME ? How much does the visual element add to the sharing of one's 'essence' within cyberspace ?
I hope my exploration will be of some interest, whether you're already part of this type of communication or not... SAY CHEESE!!!
By the way...If I've just broken your head I apologise. Having a rare philosophical moment.

I think it's only as valid as 'truth'. Are any of us really the face that we present to the outside world? Aren't we all just Avatars of our own making? Is the dowdy west lancashire housewife truly being her SELF when she is the vivacious 6 foot tall blonde super assassin or merely playing her dreams and who she would like to be? Taking it further how does Faith play a part when the entire world is based on the prospect that no-one you are interacting with is real? An exciting idea to mull over.
